MISA meets Media ministry officials
WINDHOEK, Namibia, 16 October 2015 / PRN Africa / -- MISA-Zimbabwe on 13 October 2015 held a meeting with the Ministry of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services' Permanent Secretary George Charamba and other senior ministry officials which focused on the state of the media and media professionalism.
The meeting followed weekend media reports stating the ministry's position on the media and the role media organisations should play regarding the government-sanctioned Information and Media Panel of Inquiry's (IMPI), findings and recommendations.
The ministry took opportunity of the meeting to update MISA-Zimbabwe on government's policy formulation processes and intentions pertaining to the findings and recommendations of the IMPI report.
The 666-page report which was officially launched on 18 March 2015, among other issues, recommends the repeal of laws such as the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Broadcasting Services Act, Censorship and Entertainment Controls Act , Official Secrets Act and Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act.
Charamba also updated the meeting on the digital migration process and the government's plans on the opening up of the broadcasting sector.
MISA-Zimbabwe which was represented by Chairperson Kumbirai Mafunda, Board Member Columbus Mavhunga, National Director Nhlanhla Ngwenya and Programmes Co-ordinator Nyasha Nyakunu, briefed the meeting on its outreach activities pertaining to the IMPI report.
The meeting also emphasised the need for continuous engagement on pertinent issues that can assist in developing and professionalising the media industry in Zimbabwe.
