Harlem International Film Festival Celebrates Everyone is a Winner at the 10th Anniversary Festivities!
Awarding Global Films from Harlem to Hong Kong
NEW YORK, Sept. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 10(th )Anniversary Harlem International Film Festival (Hi) September 9-13, showcased the world's finest independent cinema, bestowing honors on 42 films and nine screenplays including the coveted Mira NairAward for Rising Female Filmmaker awarded to Chelsea Kane.
The Festival's primary venue, MIST Harlem www.mistharlem.com was buzzing with excitement and anticipation for 5 days including film, fun, food and the best of Harlem! The opening night party was presented by Richard Parsons'The Cecil restaurant http://thececilharlem.com/. Wine, champagne, hors d'oeuvres and music were served throughout the celebration. In addition, Parsons' Minton's restaurant hosted a distinguished film producers and philanthropists panel discussion, with a special menu prepared by celebrity chef JJ Johnson.
The Festival screened dozens of premieres including Adepero Oduye's (12 Years a Slave, Pariah) directorial debut Breaking In,the US Premiere of Adolfo Perez Esquivel: Rivers of Hope (awarded Best Documentary) and the World Premiere of the Philippines film Ari: My Life With a King (awarded Best World Film).
Special appearances included Mike Colter(Netflix's Luke Cage, The Good Wife) the star of America is Still the Place (awarded Best Film) based on the remarkable true story of Charlie Walker who fast-talked himself into a huge contract to clean up one of the largest oil spills in US history. Walker joined director Patrick Gilles for an unforgettable Q&A after the NY Premiere.
Also spotted on the red carpet were actress Abigail Savage from Emmy winning Orange is the New Black, actor James McDaniel(Limitless, NYPD Blue), Malaak Shabazz, Malcolm X's youngest daughter and Harlem writer William Melvin Kelley.
Opening and closing night speeches included co-sponsor Harlem Community Development Corporation (HCDC) President Curtis Archer and Hi Advisory Board member Dr. Jeffery Gardere (NBC Today Show, FOX 5 News) best known as "America's Psychiatrist." The Festival ended on a truly inspirational note after young Zemene, who journeyed from Ethiopia to attend the NY Premiere of the film named after her, took the stage to address the audience after a standing ovation.
