Gracenote Launches DVR Extend for Live Sports
New Feature Combines Sports and TV Data to Record Games in OT
EMERYVILLE, Calif., Sept. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --Gracenote wants to make sure you to never miss the end of the game again. Gracenote, the world's leading provider of entertainment data and subsidiary of Tribune Media Company (NYSE: TRCO), today announced the launch of its On Entertainment "DVR Extend" feature for U.S.-based cable and satellite operators. This means that sports fans won't have to pad their DVR recordings of the Stanley Cup by two hours only to miss the winning goal by a few seconds.

In the world of live sports, going into overtime is nothing new. Last year, half of the FIFA World Cup games ended after additional time or penalty kicks. Nearly 20 percent of MLB playoff games went into extra innings. And one out of three NBA finals games ended in overtime. In other words, many fans may have missed the most intense moments and game-winning highlights of their favorite teams because their DVRs stopped recording.
The new DVR Extend feature uses a combination of predictive analytics based on live game stats, historical sports data, TV schedules and human editors to automatically adjust the recording of a live sports game in the event that it goes past the scheduled broadcast time. During each game, predictive updates will be delivered in real-time to cable and satellite customers to help them make the necessary adjustments to TV schedules and DVR recordings. Gracenote's DVR Extend feature ensures that viewers won't miss a last-second three-point shot by the NBA's Stephen Curry ever again.
"There's been tremendously positive response from the market to Gracenote Sports," said Rich Cusick, general manager of Video for Gracenote. "In a fiercely competitive environment, our global customers, including the world's top cable and satellite operators, consumer electronics manufacturers and automakers, are constantly looking for ways to deliver greater value to their users by improving experiences around compelling content such as live sports. We believe features like DVR Extend are the exact type of innovation that will differentiate them from their competitors and drive deeper engagement and loyalty among their users."
In May 2015, Gracenote launched its Sports business to deliver entirely new experiences for sports fans across TV, mobile, the Web and connected cars. DVR Extend is the first of a series of sports offerings that integrates Gracenote's comprehensive database of sports schedules, scores, play-by-play stats, as well as team and player information for all of the major professional leagues around the world. With TV listings and schedules for more than 65 countries coupled with data for more than 400 sports leagues in 17 languages around the world, Gracenote has become the definitive authority on TV and live sports events.
Gracenote's new integrated sports and video offering will also improve the way sports fans engage with their favorite sports. By mapping data for the world's most popular sports to Gracenote's deep descriptive metadata and industry standard TMS ID, Gracenote makes it easier for viewers to find and record programs featuring specific sports, leagues, divisions, teams and major events. It will also help viewers link to related programs such as pre- and post-game shows.
Cable and satellite operators interested in further personalizing the sports viewing experience can easily add play-by-play game and player statistics as overlays on the TV as well as send timely push notifications by way of mobile applications. In addition to helping fans get "into the game," Gracenote's next-generation sports data and statistics and rich game imagery can be presented in unique ways to drive viewership in real-time.
Earlier this year, Gracenote acquired Infostrada Sports and SportsDirect, Inc., to become the first global provider of music, movie, TV and sports data. Together, the two companies produce and distribute the most extensive set of sports data in North America, Europe and Asia and serve as the foundation for Gracenote to deliver next-generation sports statistics to the rapidly growing sports entertainment market.
