According to Raj Dash, managing editor, "there are a variety of factors, from cultural heritage, to public support, to thriving university art spaces which help to promote our top music scenes. While at the end of the day the 'best' music scenes in the nation may come down to personal preference, we tried to compile information relating to some of the indicators of a thriving college music scene into our ranking."

Notable trends include the proliferation of thriving music scenes in hotspots throughout the south and American megacities, locations that were the birthplaces of traditional American music forms.
