Scottish Company Set to Light Up Film Industry
Scottish Company Set to Light Up Film Industry
GLASGOW, Scotland, August 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
A Glasgow company that can boast one of Hollywood's top cinematographers as a client
has now set opened its doors to the crowd for investment.
Blind Spot Gear, winner of the Great British Entrepreneurial Award, created the
Scorpion Light, a portable, flexible and affordable light that can be used by filmmakers
in any location.
The company was set up in 2013 by mechanical engineers Alan Easdale and Jamie Campbell,
and BAFTA winning filmmaker Billy Campbell.
The Scorpion Light has been used by award winning cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey,
who was Director of Photography on Godzilla, Avengers Assemble, Atonement and the upcoming
Pan. It is also used on the historical hit TV series Outlander set in the Highlands.
With 60% of sales currently going to the USA, Scottish Edge winners Blind Spot Gear is
hoping to expand its international customer base even further as well as increasing its
product range over the next few years.
Billy said: "I met Alan and Jamie at the Starter for Six programme run by Cultural
Enterprise. We were working on our own ventures but after discussing ideas we realised we
filled in each other's skill gaps. We set up Blind Spot Gear and once we had designed a
prototype of what is now the Scorpion Light, we used Kickstarter, not only for funding
purposes but also to gauge reaction.
"The feedback we received from potential customers and the fact we exceeded our
initial target was validation that our product would take off so we began to look at
manufacturers. Now, we are selling to filmmakers across the world, especially those who
specialise in online content."
The Scorpion Light is perfect for those who create online content as it can attach to
virtually anywhere including table legs, door frames and window sills while being low
weight and its advanced LED systems means it can run non-stop for 50,000 hours.
Billy added: "Online video content is rapidly increasing as more and more filmmakers
are using it as a platform for their work. Although The Scorpion Light has been used by
BBC, CNN and Outlander, we see the majority of our sales coming from those who primarily
use the internet. We have another eight products in the pipeline and we are hoping to take
on our first full-time employee in the next few months to cope with demand.
"Seeking investment via crowd funding is a perfect way to grow our business, not only
do we gain experience and knowledge from lots of different investors we also get to
increase our brand identity in the wider business community"
