Rentrak Cross-Platform Entertainment Rankings - March 11, 2015
-- Only Rentrak Precisely Measures Movies & TV Everywhere --
PORTLAND, Ore., March 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for March 11, 2015.
Warner Bros. had a great weekend globally and internationally with Will Smith in "Focus" taking the top spot in the worldwide derby with $27.72 million (while taking second place this weekend in North America with $10 million). The Wachowski's sci-fi epic "Jupiter Ascending" led the charge on the international chart with $25.3 million and "American Sniper" crossed the $500 million milestone in global box office. Notably, Sony's sci-fi entry "Chappie" opened in the second spot worldwide this weekend with $27 million, while taking the number one spot in North America with $13.3 million.
In Movies on Demand action, Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1," the third movie in "The Hunger Games" series, opened strong in its first week landing in the number one position. RADiUS-TWC's title, "The Last Five Years," continues to show a strong performance, climbing the charts to the 15th spot. Of note, Fox has seven of the top 20 titles, largely thanks to the success of their key Oscar(®) winners like "Birdman" and other Oscar(®)-nominated films.
The DVD and Blu-ray sales chart has a new hero in the number one spot as Disney's animated blockbuster "Big Hero 6" generates huge interest in its debut, while last week's number one seller, Warner Bros.' "Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season" continues strong, but moves into the second spot in its second week. On the rental side of the DVD and Blu-ray ledger, Fox's thriller "Gone Girl" continues to be a major draw as does Universal's action film "Lucy," starring Scarlett Johansson.
On our Movies on Demand chart, the PG-rated family-friendly "Big Hero 6" is the big winner, followed in second place by the very R-rated "Horrible Bosses 2" from Warner Bros. Third place belongs to Oscar(®) winner Eddie Redmayne in Universal's "The Theory of Everything."
CBS' "NCIS" family wins big on our broadcast TV engagement chart again this week with "NCIS" and "NCIS: New Orleans" at number one and three respectively, while ABC's "The Oscars" takes the second spot.
AMC's ever-popular "The Walking Dead" tops the cable TV engagement chart once again, followed by VH1's "Love and Hip Hop" and TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles."
Finally, in our combined social media and digital engagement for viewers of broadcast and cable telecasts, ABC's "The Oscars" got a big assist from Facebook to lead the charge on the social media activity chart with live post updates throughout the night. The "Welcome to the 87th #Oscars!" opening number was the most engaging post with over 320,000 interactions. The second place program, NBC's "Saturday Night Live" benefited from YouTube clips for the 40th Anniversary special continuing to be uploaded to the channel. A slew of remix videos that were uploaded to YouTube helped Fox's "Empire" round out the top three with more than 41,000 YouTube views.
