WTVD ABC 11 Joins Tobacco Road Marathon As Media Partner
DURHAM, N.C., Jan. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- WTVD ABC 11 and the Allscripts Tobacco Road Marathon (TRM) presented by Inside-Out Sports announced today the TV station will be the media partner for the rapidly growing charitable running event. The marathon is run concurrently with a companion event, the GNC Half-Marathon sponsored by area franchises of that company.

The announcement comes on the heels of other important milestones for the Cary, North Carolina-based race weekend coming March 15. In 2014 TRM was named by Runner's World Magazine as one of America's top marathons and last month it became part of the USA Track & Field NC state championship.
"We are honored to have one of the great institutions of the Triangle Area as our media partner," says TRM President, Founder and ten-time Boston Marathon Qualifier Kazem Yahyapour. "WTVD has been around over 60 years and has an exemplary record of giving to the community. Their outstanding charity programs like the 'Heart of Carolina Food Drive' benefitting local food banks, and the 'Be The Match Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive' inspire us in our own charitable efforts."
TRM, a homegrown, all-volunteer event, will exceed one half-million dollars ($500,000) in charitable giving in 2015. TRM insures that all event proceeds go to its partner charities: JDRF, the Wounded Warrior Project, the American Red Cross and the Rails to Trails Conservancy as well as Wake County Parks and Recreation.
"We are honored to take part in an event that not only trains and supports avid runners, but benefits several organizations that provide critical needs in our communities," said Monica Barnes, Community Affairs and Programming Director at ABC 11.
The TRM events are favorites of runners because they are conducted on the American Tobacco Trail, the fastest, flattest course in North Carolina and the average high temperatures in March are a performance-enhancing 51 degrees Fahrenheit. Ten percent of TRM runners qualify for the Boston Marathon. See a video capturing the excitement at the TRM YouTube Channel.
The Tobacco Road Marathon Association is a non-profit organization dedicated with its sponsors to providing financial assistance to its partner charities by channeling the passions of the North Carolina Triangle area's running community into a powerful force for good.
