Advertising Accounts for 25% of World Series Telecast
HOBE SOUND, Fla., Nov. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- This year's World Series was played between the Kansas City Royals and the San Francisco Giants. Americans for Responsible Advertising Inc. (AFRA) recorded and analyzed the fifth game of the series. That game was played on October 26th in San Francisco and the telecast started at 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time.
Fox Sports' live telecast lasted three hours and 11 minutes. The Giants won five to nothing in eight and one-half innings. During the telecast there were 115 full-screen and partial-screen commercials which accounted for approximately 47 minutes or 25% (47/191) of air time. At the end of every inning and every half-inning the network ran about thee minutes of full-screen commercials. When the telecast returned to AT&T Park after each of the three-minute breaks, it ran 15-second, partial-screen B2YB (Brought-To-You-By) commercials during which three of the telecast's sponsors were identified.
The one exception to this occurred at the beginning of one of the middle innings when the B2YB was deferred in order to mention the recent death in an automobile accident of a St. Louis Cardinals' player. The deferred B2YB was run after the second out of that inning.
People who watched the telecast were exposed to lots of visual advertising other than television advertising. There was hardly a square inch of AT&T Park that wasn't covered with a sign or banner of some sort.
The 25% of broadcast time can be compared to the 18% of broadcast time that NBC devoted to commercials during the 2014 U. S. Open.
