New Vision was nominated by a listener who felt their work in solar energy fit the criteria of remarkable individuals who are working hard to make a positive difference in their communities and beyond.
Ruston Seaman flew into Boulder, CO to accept the award. "Democrats and Republicans are lighting the world together," Seaman noted as he described how the light panel is created from recycled political signs. "Working with disadvantaged students in West VA is important. We are able to increase the students' feeling of self-worth, while they are learning a marketable skills in solar energy," said Seaman proudly.
New Vision has produced more than 2200 lights and placed them in 32 countries around the world. Their youth mentoring network, Global I.M.P.A.C.T., works with many different groups, from at-risk youth organizations to corporations to educate about solar energy, STEM education and global energy poverty.
"New Vision is blessed by a good network of friends around the country and around the community, this recognition is the combined efforts of hundreds of people all working together," shared Seaman.
Nick and Helen Forster, hosts of eTown, one of the NPR's most popular segments, stated, "Featuring the incredibly important work of Ruston and his organization on our national radio was an honor. His story, and the effort he has built, reflect the very mission and message of our radio program: To spread the word about the importance of living sustainably, and to celebrate individuals taking a step, doing what they can, to reach out and help others who are in need."
New Vision celebrated their 5 Year Anniversary on September 11th and are launching their first Kickstarter campaign to produce their next generation of solar light, Ray of Life. The campaign will be launched in October. "We are excited to share our story and our new efforts on Kickstarter. The key to our future is having more people understand and get involved with helping to reenergize homes and communities around the world."
