Wikia Expands Fan-fueled Content Syndication With Sony's Applications
Fan-authored content from Wikia Integrated into Sony's next generation applications and devices
SAN FRANCISCO, May 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Wikia, the social universe of fandom and the ultimate source for powerful and relevant pop culture, entertainment and gaming expertise, today announced that Wikia has licensed Sony to integrate Wikia's Syndication API to give access to the rich world of content available on Wikia communities.
Wikia's fan-authored entertainment content will be integrated into a range of next generation Sony applications. Through this arrangement, Wikia's fans will be able to see the results of their contributions not only on Wikia's web and mobile products, but Sony's entertainment applications, TV SideView and Socialife News.
With over two-thirds of its nearly 400,000 fan communities focused on television, film, music, books, console and social games, Wikia is the perfect partner to provide Sony consumers with access to millions of pages of authoritative content on subjects to power their entertainment choices. Every edit and contribution made across Wikia's vast network will dynamically update within Sony's TV SideView and Socialife News applications, driving high assurance that fans everywhere are getting the latest information right at the click-to-watch moment.
"The Wikia fan community is an extremely passionate and inspirational voice of the digital generation which will now be accessible through people's everyday entertainment experiences," said Owen Adams, VP Product, Wikia. "Sony provides the perfect platform for our 'superfans' to create interactive conversations, bringing a completely new level to enjoying entertainment."
"Giving our customers access to Wikia's expansive range of fan-authored entertainment content through our applications is part of our continuing efforts to deliver a robust experience for our customers," said Makoto Ishii, General Manager, Multi Screen UX Service Department, Planning & Operation Division, UX & Product Strategy Group, Sony Corporation. "Together, we will enrich the user experience of our upcoming applications."
Coinciding with this, Wikia debuts an expanded collection of collaboratively curated hub pages to build on the existing destinations on Wikia.com and within MyWikia, its signature tablet application. The content range will now include categories that are more accessible to the fan community and will feed directly into syndicated partnerships, including with Sony's applications. The new hubs will be Games, Lifestyle, TV, Movies, Music, Books and Comics.
Wikia's hub pages offer a more visual representation of the best collaboratively created content from its nearly 400,000 fan sites into an editorial-like interface that ensures that the best content and most popular topics on Wikia are surfaced for discovery.
Wikia previously aligned with leading movie review site Rotten Tomatoes on a fruitful syndication partnership for TV Zone. TV Zone utilizes Wikia's vast portfolio of TV content and information currently available on the site. Rotten Tomatoes selected Wikia to power the most popular and sought after television pages on TV Zone, providing cast and show info, links to reviews and episode recaps.
Within two-and-a-half years, the Wikia online global community has grown from 45 million monthly unique visitors nearly doubled to now represent over the 110 monthly unique visitors, as reported by Quantcast. Additionally, the Wikia fan base continues to embrace the mobile experience and multi-media assets found within the community, adding over 32 million photos and videos accessible on the platform.
