Stretta Therapy for GERD featured on The Doctors TV program
NORWALK, Conn., May 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Emmy Award-winning TV program The Doctors recently featured the case of "Jenny," a 29-year-old with severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Jenny suffered for three years before she turned to University of California Irvine's Dr. Kenneth Chang for a solution in the form of Stretta(®) therapy.

Jenny had chronic GERD that was uncontrolled with medications and suffered from constant discomfort and pain. In The Doctors episode, Dr. Chang provides an overview of Stretta and explains that it works by treating the sphincter muscle at the top of the stomach with radiofrequency (RF) energy, to create a stronger, thicker muscle. The improvement in muscle function restores the natural barrier to reflux and prevents stomach contents from refluxing up into the esophagus, which was the cause of Jenny's painful symptoms.
Dr. Chang is shown performing Jenny's Stretta procedure, pointing out the loose muscle pre-Stretta and the tighter muscle post-Stretta, which resulted in the improvement in Jenny's GERD symptoms.
Just a couple of months post-Stretta Jenny's symptoms have resolved and she is now off the medications she previously took to control her reflux. "I'm feeling great," she said, "I'm able to enjoy food again for the first time in years."
The show's hosts, Dr. Travis Stork and Dr. Rachel Ross noted that because Jenny was young and healthy, she didn't fit their idea of the typical GERD patient. Dr. Chang replied, "Twenty percent of Americans have weekly reflux, about four million people are on chronic medication for their reflux, and refluxers come in all shapes and sizes." Dr. Chang goes on to explain why Stretta is an ideal "middle" therapy. "For a long time the only options were medications or invasive surgery, but the Stretta procedure represents an outpatient simple procedure that is fast, effective and safe."
