The Centsables Program: A Super Way To Celebrate Financial Literacy Month

The Centsables animated TV series, airing Saturday mornings on Fox Business at 11 AM ET, recently received a Parents Choice Award, based on the show's educational value, as well as its contribution to the social, emotional growth and well-being of children. The episodes, targeted to kids 6-12, feature six super-hero friends who through their everyday adventures and examples teach sound fiscal responsibility and positive behavior. When the kids of Centsinnati are threatened by villains like Credi-tor and the Liquidator, the Centsables leap into action, fighting evil-doers with abilities that include super speed and powers over water and wind. The TV series, which is available in English and Spanish, is currently also being broadcast on Telemundo PR.

Being launched during Financial Literacy Month is the multi-media initiative's newest component: Centsables lesson modules, available in teacher and parent versions. Each module includes two episodes of the award-winning TV series, plus two correlating lesson plans, and includes downloads for all materials and certificates of completion. Mark DiPippa, creator of the Centsables program, explains that "with today's kids spending more than $30 billion on purchases each year, financial literacy continues to be a priority. Yet it goes largely unaddressed at schools, where the curriculum leaves no room, or at home, where parents feel embarrassed or uncomfortable discussing finance. These modules are designed to answer that need, providing all the materials for lessons with none of the work."

The CENTSABLES website, www.centsables.com, provides another source of practical, real-life lessons on money management, basic economics and investing. Using activity pages, interactive tools, and downloadable forms, children can master banking skills such as check-writing and budgeting, calculating interest, preparing deposit slips and earning money. The Centsables website is available in English and Spanish.

The proprietary Savings For Kids program, offered through more than 40 partnering banks and credit unions across the country, provides a turn-key opportunity for financial institutions to encourage savings and good financial management for youngsters, while building long-term relationships and cross-sell opportunities.

Additional components of the Centsables initiative include a mobile financial fitness tour, special events, Factivity books and comic book series, as well as extensive merchandising including collectible action figures, games, trading cards, clothing and other licensed products.
