The 56th Annual Dance Magazine Awards
The 56th Annual Dance Magazine Awards
NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Dance Magazine honors five exceptional artists at The Ailey Citigroup Theater (405 West 55(th) St) in Manhattan on Monday, December 9, 2013. In terms of both genre and geography, these five represent a broad span of excellence: the otherworldly San Francisco Ballet ballerina Yuan Yuan Tan, dance-theater visionary Martha Clarke, Swedish maverick choreographer Mats Ek, Balanchine's allegro ballerina Patricia Wilde, and the composer whose transporting music sends dancers into upper realms, Philip Glass.
This is the first time Dance Magazine is honoring a composer since 1979, when an award went to Aaron Copland.
Christopher Wheeldon will present to Yuan Yuan Tan, Robert Barnett will honor Patricia Wilde, Charles Reinhart will introduce Martha Clarke, Damian Woetzel will present to Philip Glass, and Jorma Elo will speak about Mats Ek.
An excerpt of Clarke's Cheri, which will have opened the night before at Signature Theater, will be performed by Alessandra Ferri and Herman Cornejo. With Cheri, Ferri is making her first stage appearance in the U.S. since she retired from American Ballet Theatre in 2007.
New York City Ballet principal Ashley Bouder will perform an excerpt of Balanchine's Square Dance in tribute to Wilde.
The evening is open to the public with a reception immediately following in The Ailey Studios. Tickets are available for $50. Contact Ashley Mathus at 212-979-4872 or dmawards@dancemedia.com.
Doors open at 7:00 pm. The program begins at 7:30 pm.
The Dance Magazine Awards are lifetime achievement awards. They recognize the outstanding men and women whose contributions have left a lasting impact on the dance world. The tradition dates back to 1954.
