LOS ANGELES, July 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Award winning American documentary filmmakers will show their support for Swedish film director Fredrik Gertten when he brings his acclaimed non-fiction film BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* to the United States to begin its theatrical run.
BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* is the true story about a banana corporation and a documentary filmmaker: corporate bullying vs. freedom of speech.
Academy Award® nominated filmmakers Joe Berlinger (CRUDE), Morgan Spurlock (SUPER SIZE ME), Lucy Walker (WASTE LAND; THE TSUNAMI AND THE CHERRY BLOSSOM), and Elise Pearlstein (FOOD, INC.) join Sundance Winner Ondi Timoner (DIG!; WE LIVE IN PUBLIC) to moderate post screening discussions with director Gertten and attorney Lincoln Bandlow on the film's opening weekends in New York and Los Angeles.
"I am deeply grateful and honored to have my US filmmaking colleagues join me in these events where we can discuss freedom of speech, corporate intimidation and the future of making non-fiction films," said director Gertten.
BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* premiered at Sundance Film Fest 2012 and has been called a classic David Vs Goliath story. But it is more about freedom of speech and what happens to a documentary filmmaker when he goes up against a large corporation such as Dole Foods and how far Dole will go to shift the focus off of them and onto the filmmaker even after their own CEO has admitted wrong doing in a court of law and was captured on film. Media spin, public relations scare tactics, dirty tricks, lawsuits, and corporate bullying come into play to try and destroy the filmmaker and his production company WG Film. But, it is the people who ultimately prevail, creating a cautionary tale and a real life-lesson learning experience.
BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* opens on July 27 in New York at the Quad and in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Pasadena Playhouse on August 3. Film opens wider during summer and fall. Screening schedules listing discussion participants are available online at www.bigboysgonebananas.com
