Groundbreaking Program Of Art & Creativity Begins May 1st On Times Square Signs
First-Ever Coordinated, Daily Showing Represents Donated LED Screen Time Valued at Close to One Million Dollars Annually
"Times Square Moment: A Digital Gallery" launches with the touring exhibition 'Robert Wilson Video Portraits'
NEW YORK, May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Alliance have announced the official launch of "Times Square Moment: A Digital Gallery," an unprecedented public-private partnership to bring creativity and cutting edge digital and video art to the world's center of communications. Starting May 1, more than a dozen digital signs in Times Square will feature a daily, coordinated display of high-quality content at a regularly scheduled time, with content changing every month. The program represents the first time multiple Times Square sign operators and owners have donated screen time, valued at close to one million dollars annually. For May, the signs will exhibit the international touring exhibition,Robert Wilson Video Portraits,a body of work created by renowned artist Robert Wilson, screening every evening at 11:57 pm and running for three minutes.
"The Times Square Moment represents a unique collaboration by the Times Square sign operators, who have always been on the cutting edge of what is new and innovative in terms of visual displays and creativity," said Alan High, Chairman of TSAC and President & General Manager of the Clear Channel Spectacolor and Clear Channel Malls divisions of its parent company, Clear Channel Outdoor. "This program is a reminder of the uniqueness of Times Square signage as well as our commitment to constantly re-inventing the Times Square experience so it is distinctive and memorable."
"The Times Square Moment is unprecedented in its scale of a private-public partnership. The sign holders have been very supportive of public art in the past, but on a project by project basis," said Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance. "This is the first time there has been a commitment amongst numerous companies to present work simultaneously on the signs. Times Square Coalition is making history as the largest square footage donation of electronic signs internationally. We are proud to work in partnership on this effort."
"New York City's Times Square is the ultimate public space. The scale is well beyond what I have reached with this work. The video portraits will act as a window from Times Square into the personal, poetic statements of the different personalities represented. These still lives are real lives. New York City has been home for most of my adult life, although for the past 40 years my work has been seen mostly outside of the U.S. It is great to have this work shown at home," said featured artist Robert Wilson.
The following digital screens are expected to participate in May: ABC Super Sign, American Eagle, Bank of America, Disney Store LED Screen, Doubletree Sign, JVC Screen, MTV Video Screen, NASDAQ, NASDAQ Marquee, Spectacolor HD129 Times Square Visitor Center Marque, Spectacolor HD 128, Spectacolor HD 127 CNN Screen, Times Square Visitor Center lobby screens, Viacom Building Northeast and Southeast (SL Green Realty and Orange Barrel Media) and Thomson Reuters. The signs will continue to run the content every evening at 11:57 pm through May 31.
