Point.360 Announces Second Fiscal Quarter and First Half Results

BURBANK, Calif., Feb. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Point.360 (NASDAQ: PTSX), a leading provider of integrated media management services, today announced results for the three and six month periods ended December 31, 2011, including sales of $17.5 million and earnings per share of $0.02 for the six months ended December 31, 2011. The Company also reported $1.1 million of positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization and non-cash charges (EBITDAN) for the second quarter, and EBITDAN of $2.3 million for the six-month period.
Haig S. Bagerdjian, the Company's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer said: "We are encouraged by the progress made in the first and second fiscal quarters. The move of our corporate headquarters and Digital Film Labs to our Media Center will be completed by the end of February. Total annual savings will approximate $1.2 million beginning in the fourth fiscal quarter."
Mr. Bagerdjian continued: "We will continue to evaluate additional cost saving opportunities while we expand our file based post production service offering."
Revenues
Revenue for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 totaled $8.5 million compared to $9.1 million in the same quarter last year. Revenues for the six months ended December 31, 2011 were $17.5 compared to $17.3 million last year. Fluctuations between the periods were due to the timing of service deliveries.
Gross Margin
In the second quarter of fiscal 2012, gross margin was $3.0 million (36% of sales), compared to $3.0 million (33% of sales) in the prior year's second quarter. For the first half of fiscal 2012, gross margin was $6.5 million or 37% of sales, compared to $4.8 million, or 28% of sales in last year's period.
Selling, General and Administrative and Other Expenses
For the second quarter of fiscal 2012, SG&A expenses were $3.0 million, or 35% of sales, compared to $3.3 million, or 37% of sales, in the second quarter of last year. For the six months ended December 31, 2011, SG&A expenses were $6.2 million (35% of sales) compared to $7.0 million (40% of sales) last year. SG&A personnel costs have been reduced $0.2 million and $0.5 million in each of the current and six month periods, respectively, when compared to the prior year periods.
Research and development costs associated with Movie>Q and other projects were $0.1 million and $0.3 million in the three and six month periods ended December 31, 2010.
Interest expense was $0.2 million and $0.4 million for the three and six month periods ended December 31, 2011, and $0.2 million and $0.4 million in the three and six month periods ended December 31, 2010. In last year's six-month period, the Company received $0.1 million of interest income from the Internal Revenue Service associated with a $1.5 million tax refund.
Other income in all periods represents sublease income and gain on sale of fixed assets. In the 2011 three and six month periods, other income also included a $0.1 million discount on debt repayment. In the prior year periods, other income was offset by a put option expense of $0.1 million.
Operating Income (Loss)
Operating income was $44,000 in the second quarter of fiscal 2012 compared to a loss of $0.4 million in last year's second quarter. For the six month period ended December 31, 2011, operating income was $0.3 million compared to a loss of $2.4 million in the prior year.
Net Income (Loss)
For the second quarter of fiscal 2012, the Company reported net income of $51,000 ($0.00 per share) compared to a net loss of $0.6 million ($0.05 per share) in the same period last year. For the six months ended December 31, 2011, the Company reported net income of $160,000 ($0.02 per share) compared to a net loss of $2.6 million ($0.24 per share) in the prior year period.
