"The Hipster Orchestra started as a joke," says Jingle PunksCEOJared Gutstadt, "but it has snowballed into a real band." Jared explains: "It's a simple concept. We took modern hit indie songs and re-imagined them as string arrangements for a civilized dinner party. They're our favorite 'hipster approved' songs, washed through the Mark Mothersbaugh filter."
The concept kicked off with a string of viral videos where the group covered The Strokes "Under Cover of Darkness" and MGMT's "Time to Pretend." Major blog notice and live shows quickly followed.
With some exposure came the opportunity to work with what many people believe to be the Holy Grail of alt rock material - Nirvana's seminal Nevermind record. Justin Shukat of Nirvana Publisher Primary Wave explains "Nirvana's material is a very serious deal. I liked the concept of the Hipster Orchestra covering the album for the anniversary of Nevermind because it doesn't try to re-write these songs in a context that competes... this is just about doing a really smart tribute to the material. I truly think this is a release that's going to find its way into many different markets."
Since the launch of The Hipster Orchestra, Jingle Punks has managed to integrate this idea into programming on NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly, a live appearance in the new season of 90210, and several high profile gigs at industry centric venues like The Toronto Film Festival. "The whole goal of this project was to shed light on cool tunes that we like here at Jingle Punks and maybe get more opportunities that way. The idea worked, and has since landed us an HBO series and the composing gig for Morgan Spurlock's new film Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan's Hope. Playing live with an orchestra as business development is what I call a win-win" says Jared.
