Preservation Hall Jazz Band Wraps Up Great Park Flights & Sounds Summer Festival
Final Weekend of Live Music Festival Begins Friday with BlackMahal Dance Concert
IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Flights & Sounds Summer Festival culminates with a spectacular weekend finale featuring BlackMahal and the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Not everyone can go to New Orleans, so come to the Flights & Sounds Summer Festival season finale, Saturday night, September 3 when the Great Park brings the world-famous New Orleans Preservation Hall Jazz Band to the Great Park stage to celebrate the rich musical interplay known as Dixieland jazz. Parking for the Flights & Sounds Summer Festival is $10, and admission is free. Events begin at 8:15 p.m.
A French Quarter legend, Preservation Hall opened its doors in 1961, inspired by years of informal jam sessions that had taken place in the early 1800s building. Several of Preservation Hall Jazz Band's original members honed their talents playing alongside jazz originators such as Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden and Jelly Roll Morton. Their craft, in turn, has been passed on directly to successive generations of band members.
Get your "turban groove" on Friday night September 2 with BlackMahal, a rollicking, unpredictable, wildly danceable band that performs its blend of hip-hop and Punjabi funk.
Flights & Sounds Summer Festival takes place near the brand-new Palm Court Arts Complex and expansive North Lawn and Great Park Balloon. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the Park's inaugural exhibition in the new Great Park Gallery, Plane Air Power by Laguna Beach artist Jorg Dubin.
The Great Park offers convenient pre-order picnics, which include everything from appetizers to desert, and are available online at www.ocgp.org. You can also bring a picnic or enjoy something from the menu at the Hangar Cafe, featuring a fresh selection of delicious meals and snacks. Hangar Cafe opens at 6 p.m. before all shows, and live music begins at 8:15 p.m.
Flights & Sounds Summer Festival is presented by the Orange County Great Park and produced by Irvine Barclay Theatre. Both general admission seating and park space for lawn chairs or picnics are available for all shows.
