WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15: FAMOUS MOVIE PREMIERES

Profile America -- Wednesday, December 15th. One of the most notable films in U.S. movie history opened on this date in 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia -- "Gone with the Wind," based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the Civil War by Margaret Mitchell. The movie -- starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh -- was a huge success, winning a then unprecedented eight Academy Awards. The publicity surrounding the premier was such that 300,000 people braved the cold to watch the stars arrive at Loew's Grand Theater, and the governor of Georgia proclaimed a state holiday in honor of the event. In 1939, there were more than 15,000 movie theaters across the U.S. Today, that figure is just under 5,000. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
