WFLA-TV (Tampa, Fla.) is First in Tampa Market to Launch MDTV
RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Media General, Inc. (NYSE: MEG) said that WFLA-TV, its NBC affiliate in Tampa, Fla., is the first broadcast television station in the Tampa market, and the second Media General station, to launch mobile digital television (MDTV). The real-time local broadcast service began during the week of October 11 in Tampa, and can be received on suitably equipped laptops, mobile phones and other portable devices. WCMH-TV, Media General's Columbus, Ohio, NBC affiliate, launched Mobile DTV on September 23.
Marshall N. Morton, president and chief executive officer of Media General, said, "In addition to now offering Mobile DTV in two television markets, we look forward to extending our reach to as many as 4-6 additional television markets in the coming months. We already serve a growing audience over numerous personal wireless devices, with our e-mail, APPs, SMS, and mobile website services. We also are pleased to be part of a group of 12 broadcasters who comprise the vanguard for Mobile DTV."
John Schueler, president of the Florida Communications Group, said, "Mobile DTV from WFLA-TV is an exciting opportunity that will allow viewers to access our newscasts wherever they are. This service underscores our commitment to be the area's preeminent news and information source."
Mobile DTV allows broadcasters to provide their local content to suitably equipped mobile devices, including live and on-demand video, local and national news from print and electronic sources, and sports and entertainment programming. Some devices have a "chipset" already built in to receive the signal, while others require an external USB-type or other tuner available at electronics stores. Research shows that mobile-equipped consumers watch more television than before and that they particularly appreciate convenient access to live, local news.
