HBO Films, Time Warner Cable and The Autism Society of North Carolina to Host North Carolina Premiere of 'TEMPLE GRANDIN' on Monday, February 1 at the Friday Center for Continuing Education on the Campus of UNC-Chapel Hill
Film stars Golden Globe(R) winner Claire Danes; Tells extraordinary story of
Temple Grandin -- best-selling author, animal scientist and autism advocate
What: HBO Films and Time Warner Cable have partnered with The Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) to host the invitation-only North Carolina premiere of HBO Films' TEMPLE GRANDIN.
Highlighted by a transformative performance by Claire Danes, TEMPLE GRANDIN is a fascinating chronicle of one woman's extraordinary life journey, tracing Grandin's struggles as a terrified autistic teenager who evolved, with the help of her mother, aunt and academic mentors, into a celebrated academic whose interest in animals, particularly cows and other livestock, transformed the way cattle ranches are designed and managed. Grandin's unique ability to empathize with the animals she studied led her to devise much more efficient, and humane, ways for the cattle industry to manage their animals, even as they were being led to slaughter.
Why: Recent studies have shown that the current rate of incidence of autism is up to one of every 110 children born in North Carolina. Statewide, that's over two new diagnoses per day, in addition to the 50,000 North Carolina families already affected by autism.
When: Monday, February 1, 2010
6:00 p.m. Reception: Atrium Center
7:00 p.m. Screening: Grumman Auditorium

Details: This visually inventive film offers a stunning insight into Temple Grandin's world, taking the audience literally inside her mind with a series of snapshot images that trace her self-perceptions and journey from childhood through young adulthood to the beginning of her career. The film co-stars Catherine O'Hara ("For Your Consideration," "A Mighty Wind"), Julia Ormond ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," HBO's "Iron Jawed Angels") and Academy Award® and Golden Globe nominee David Strathairn ("Goodnight, And Good Luck," "The Bourne Ultimatum"); and is directed by three-time Directors Guild of America winner Mick Jackson ("Tuesdays with Morrie," HBO's "Live from Baghdad" and "Indictment"). TEMPLE GRANDIN debuts on HBO on Saturday, February 6 (8:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT).
