THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10: GRAND OLE OPRY
Profile America -- Thursday, December 10th. Country music and radio joined together on this date in 1927 to create one of the most successful popular culture icons. The occasion was the first broadcast of the Grand Ole Opry on WSM in Nashville, Tennessee. After 82 years, the program is still on the air. At the time, some of Nashville's civic leaders were not enthusiastic. They worried that the show's sound would project the wrong image for the city -- which, of course, long ago became the nation's capitol of country music. Today, not only is country music one of the most popular formats on the nation's radio stations, but it accounts for nearly 12 percent of the more than $10 billion of recordings Americans buy each year. Profile America is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau, now preparing for the 2010 Census.
