Discovery Channel, Cox and Virginia Aquarium Bring SHARK WEEK to Hampton Roads

Discovery Channel, Cox and Virginia Aquarium Bring SHARK WEEK to Hampton Roads

Celebrate SHARK WEEK August 2 to 7 at the Virginia Aquarium and on Channel 31 and Channel 731 (HD)

CHESAPEAKE, Va., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications, Discovery Channel and the Virginia Aquarium are bringing SHARK WEEK to Hampton Roads from August 2 through 7, by inviting Aquarium guests to see a variety of shark species up close and learn about the importance of these incredible animals. During this same period, viewers may experience Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, which can be found on Channel 31 or 731 (HD).

Discovery Channel's SHARK WEEK, now in its 22nd year, is cable's longest-running event. This year, viewers will find out if sharks behave any differently during the day than at night; what makes certain areas shark attack "hot spots"; and what still puzzles scientists about the most feared shark of them all -- the Great White. Discovery Channel's SHARK WEEK will kick off with a two-hour special entitled BLOOD IN THE WATER on Sunday, August 2, 9-11 p.m. about the true story behind Jaws.

"Cox is proud to partner with Discovery Channel and the Virginia Aquarium in bringing SHARK WEEK to life in Hampton Roads. This is a great educational opportunity for children and adults alike to learn the facts about sharks and how they are so important to nature," said Leigh Woisard, Cox Vice President of Government and Public Affairs.

Karen Burns, Education Specialist, Virginia Aquarium added, "Sharks are among the most feared and misunderstood creatures. The Virginia Aquarium is pleased to spotlight these creatures during Discovery Channel's annual SHARK WEEK and educate the public about the role they play in the overall marine ecosystem."

Aquarium programs from August 2 through 7 will focus on shark adaptations and species identification. Guests can view nurse sharks, sandbar sharks and sand tiger sharks at the Aquarium, as well as complete the Shark Shenanigans Scavenger Hunt to test their knowledge about these fascinating creatures. Also, the Virginia Aquarium 3D IMAX Theater features the movie Sharks 3D.

Discovery Channel is available to subscribers with Cox Expanded Cable. Viewers interested in more information about sharks can log on to discovery.com/sharkweek.
