Top 5 Things to Do When Pulled Over: Tips from Officers Featured on truTV's Hit Show SPEEDERS
SPEEDERS to Launch Eighth Season with 100th episode Thursday, June 11, at 8 p.m. (ET)
LOS ANGELES, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- 1. Pull over immediately.
Drivers should pull off to the right side of the road at once. They should not act as if they didn't see the officer trying to stop them. Being clueless is no excuse for ignorance. Two female tourists were stopped in Beverly Hills for making an illegal left turn. The officer tried not once, not twice, but three times to get them to pull over. When they finally did, they said they thought the officer was trying to pull someone else over. Whether a tourist or a local, everyone needs to know the law and obey it.
2. Don't make any sudden movements.
While the officer is walking to the car, drivers should not reach for a purse or wallet, because the officer may think they are trying to hide something or reaching for a weapon. Sudden, furtive movements are a big red flag to any officer pulling someone over. Alarm bells went off when a young man, pulled over for swerving, tried to hide something under his seat. A search revealed he was loaded... with a box of condoms. He wasn't trying to conceal a weapon, but an officer doesn't know that. No matter how embarrassing something in the car may be, one shouldn't try to hide it with an officer approaching.
3. Stay in the car with the seatbelt buckled.
When pulled over, drivers should keep their seatbelts on, not get out of the car reach into the glove box for insurance and registration unless and until the officer says so. This is for the safety of all concerned. In Markham, Ill., an officer recently pulled over a driver who was so excited upon getting pulled over that he jumped out of the car to rap a hip-hop beat. The driver could have been dancing to "Jailhouse Rock," but fortunately for him, the officer was patient and just issued a warning.
4. Be polite and respectful.
Drivers should be polite and respectful to the officer, listening to what he or she is asking. SPEEDERS recently came across a female driver in Oxnard, Calif., whose incessant belching was only the second most offensive thing to come out of her mouth. Her rude behavour, barrage of angry words and failure to obey traffic laws is what did her in.
5. Keep license, registration and insurance up to date.
It's obvious, but some drivers still don't get it. The easiest way to get out of a ticket is to comply with the rules of the road and drive only when all documents are current. One driver in Broward County, Florida was pulled over for running a red light that she claimed she didn't see. But then she also claimed she didn't know about her suspended license or that her insurance coverage had expired, making a bad situation worse.
