Award-Winning PBS Series A Place of Our Own & Los Ninos en Su Casa Launch New Programs
Informational Series Explore Topical Issues of Child-Rearing
LOS ANGELES, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The award-winning PBS series A Place of Our Own and its Spanish language companion series, Los Ninos en Su Casa, launch their fifth season of new programs beginning May 18 exploring a wide variety of topical issues related to raising children under age five.
Produced by KCET-TV, Los Angeles, the informational series provide English and Spanish-speaking parents and caregivers of preschool age children with practical advice on raising children who are socially, emotionally and physically ready to enter and succeed in school. Highlighted new programs include:
-- Making Thinking Visible (May 25) features the founders of the popular
Blue Man Group sharing their secrets in bringing out the artistic
talents of young children.
-- The Importance of Dads in Children's Lives (June 1) looks at the
impact fathers have in their children's lives and suggests creative
ideas for strengthening father-child bonds; and Dads and
Breastfeeding, (July 8) explains the role dads can play in supporting
their wives and contributing to the health of their children.
-- Coping with Economic Insecurities (Monday, June 22 - Friday, June 26)
includes five programs featuring experts discussing how parents can
cope with tough financial times and offering advice on family
budgeting.
A Place of Our Own and Los Ninos en Su Casa are produced in a fun, interactive format and feature discussions with child experts and hands-on skill-building exercises with young children. A Place of Our Own is hosted by award winning journalist and mother Elizabeth Sanchez, while actress and mother Alina Rosario hosts Los Ninos en Su Casa.
Searchable by topic, information is available 24/7 at www.aplaceofourown.org and www.losninosensucasa.org, including resource links and message boards fully moderated by experts that enable childcare providers to interact with one another. Both sites make available over 200 activities previously featured on the series, providing directions and supply lists for creative projects for children of all ages. Video is also available online, including segments featuring nominated care providers who have been recognized for the quality care, commitment and dedication they offer to the children in their care and to their communities.
To extend the reach of A Place of Our Own and Los Ninos en Su Casa, the lessons of the series are delivered directly to local communities through free educational workshops for parents and child care providers that provide participants with extensive information on how to use the series to gain a better understanding of key child care and education concepts. The goal of the outreach program is to help improve the skills of people caring for young children, especially those who are not formally trained in early childhood education; to introduce them to the series, and encourage them to apply its content.
The series has been honored with numerous awards, including the 2006 Peabody Award, considered the most selective and prestigious in the electronic media industry, and a Parents' Choice award for both the series and website.
The series are produced as part of KCEd(TM), the education initiative at KCET. Since the series' launch, viewing studies indicate that 80 percent of participants report increased knowledge in tested areas such as managing aggressive child behavior, sharing, and the importance of learning through play, as well as changes in their own attitudes and behavior as childcare providers
