Mortgage Payoff Awaits One Lucky Family in 'HGTV's $250,000 Challenge' Premiering May 31 at 10 PM ET/PT

Neighbors Faceoff in Design Competition to Win Cash and Room Makeovers

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Five neighboring families will compete in HGTV's $250,000 Challenge, a winner-takes-all design competition in which one lucky family will win the life-changing cash prize that could help them pay off their mortgage. In each episode of the four-part series, premiering on Sunday, May 31, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, host Drew Lachey will reveal a home improvement challenge where teams will compete to create the best design in their own home. With help from HGTV's expert talent, each family will strive not only to win the cash grand prize and the praise of design judges Kristan Cunningham (Design on a Dime) and John Gidding (Designed To Sell), but also for the chance to walk away with up to four redesigned spaces in their home.

Dancing with the Stars champion, Lachey, who also was known to viewers as a home improvement enthusiast during his stint on Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, will guide viewers through the makeover action and occasionally provide assistance to each family.

"The success of our first reality competition, HGTV Design Star, showed us that HGTV viewers enjoy design competitions and value programming that shows them new ways to upgrade or improve their homes," said Freddy James, senior vice president, programming, HGTV. "HGTV's $250,000 Challenge gives participating homeowners a cash stake in making smart design choices that enhance their lives and increase the value of their homes."

After the design challenge is revealed each week, the teams will race against the clock to complete a champion makeover. To kick off the competition, each team will be paired with an HGTV carpenter who will help them with construction and design execution throughout the series. In addition, one of HGTV's popular experts, Kim Myles (Myles of Style), David Bromstad (Color Splash), Genevieve Gorder (Dear Genevieve) or Carter Oosterhouse (Carter Can), will be on hand to offer their expert advice. From selecting color palettes and painting to installing crown molding and using power tools, each team will give its all to impress the judges and guest expert with their work. In the end, every family will win, but only one family will win it all.

Beginning May 1, HGTV.com will offer visitors a sneak peek of HGTV's $250,000 Challenge, including homeowner bios, videos of behind-the-scenes action and tons of incredible design ideas from the series. In addition, HGTV.com also will feature exclusive videos of projects created by each guest designer.

Here is what viewers can expect to see each week on HGTV's $250,000 Challenge:

Sunday, May 31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT:

The five-family competition kicks-off with a living room redesign challenge. With help from Kim Myles, host of HGTV's Myles of Style, the teams must design and accessorize the space to maximize its potential for everyday use. Everything from paint choice to furniture placement will determine who the judges will send to the next round.

Sunday, June 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

For the next challenge, four families select one bedroom in their home to redecorate. Designer David Bromstad, host of HGTV's Color Splash, will offer advice as the teams attempt to transform a tired bedroom into a stunning space. Each team must convince the judges that their style and design execution are exceptional enough keep them in the game.

Sunday, June 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

Kitchens are the heart of the home and often the most difficult room to remodel, so designer Genevieve Gorder, host of HGTV's Dear Genevieve, will help the remaining three teams create a sharp new look for their kitchen. Time management and tough design decisions will be a factor in this major makeover, making it even harder to complete a judge-pleasing design.

Sunday, June 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

The final challenge will bring the competition outside. Builder Carter Oosterhouse, host of HGTV's Carter Can, will lend his expertise to help the final two families create captivating new curb appeal to the front of the house and an outdoor oasis in the backyard. Once the dust settles, viewers will find out who wins this challenge and who scores the big $250,000 pay day.
