Panel Discussion To Follow With Local Leading Alzheimer's Experts Featured In Film

SAN FRANCISCO, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- A free screening of HBO Documentary Films' THE ALZHEIMER'S PROJECT: MOMENTUM IN SCIENCE will be held at The Neurosciences Institute (10640 John Jay Hopkins Dr.) in San Diego on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 6:00pm. Following the film, Hal Clement, anchor-reporter with 10News in San Diego will moderate a discussion with a distinguished panel of local, leading Alzheimer's researchers, including experts who appear in the films.

Panelists are Paul Aisen, MD, Director, Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study, and Professor of Neurosciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine; Carl Cotman, PhD, Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior, UC Irvine; James Brewer, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Neurosciences and Radiology, UC San Diego and David P. Salmon, PhD, Professor of Neurosciences, UC San Diego.

THE ALZHEIMER'S PROJECT features a four-part documentary series, 15 short supplemental films, a robust website, a nationwide community-based information and outreach campaign and a book published by Public Affairs Books. The MOMENTUM IN SCIENCE film is a two-part, state-of-the-science odyssey that takes viewers inside the laboratories and clinics of 25 leading scientists and physicians, revealing some of the most cutting-edge research advances. Part 1 debuts on HBO MONDAY, MAY 11 (8:00pm), followed by Part 2 on TUESDAY, MAY 12 (8:00pm).

Two years in the making, MOMENTUM IN SCIENCE details the current explosion of knowledge within the scientific and medical communities, from imaging the earliest signs of Alzheimer's, to understanding the roles that genetics and lifestyle might play, to the tremendous progress being made in the effort to develop drugs to treat or even prevent the disease.

The University of California, San Diego Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center was established in 1984 to translate research advances in Alzheimer's disease into improved diagnosis and care for patients, while focusing on finding ways to prevent, treat and ultimately eradicate the disease. It is also home to the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study - a nationwide consortium of institutions designated to carry out clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease in cooperation with the National Institute on Aging - directed by Paul Aisen, MD.

The Neurosciences Institute is dedicated to learning about the brain for the benefit of all mankind. Under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Gerald M.
