Cache-A Announces New Prime-Cache Archive Appliance for Professional Video File-Based Workflows

Plug-and-Play Archiving of File-Based Video Content Becomes Economical, Accessible, Interchangeable and Future-Proof

MORGAN HILL, Calif., April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Cache-A Corporation, a leading supplier of network-attached archive appliances for the digital film and professional video industry, today announced the Prime-Cache data tape deck. The first product in its new line of archive appliances, Prime-Cache systems now makes archiving of file-based video content truly economical, reliable, accessible, interchangeable and future-proof. Cache-A will be demonstrating Prime-Cache systems at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention (NAB 2009), Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth SL9605, April 20-23.

"Today's digital film and video professionals working with file-based workflows need a highly reliable and cost-effective storage medium for content archiving, interchange and backup," said Phil Ritti, President and CEO of Cache-A Corporation. "We are delighted to offer these professionals a new line of products specifically designed to meet their needs while extending the current base of award-winning A-Series technology into future generations."

Cache-A has licensed Quantum's A-Series technology, which integrates with industry-standard Linear Tape Open (LTO) data tape drives -- the most successful line of tape drives ever produced -- with more than 2.5 million drives deployed and 100 million cartridges shipped.

A low-cost means of archiving video assets, the Prime-Cache data tape deck writes data on secure, portable, reliable and interchangeable LTO-4 cartridges using a standard TAR format at a cost of approximately 6 cents per gigabyte (GB). With a single Prime-Cache system, a user could manage a 200 terabyte (TB) archive for a total cost of less than $20,000 including media -- and with an archive life of 30 years.

The new Prime-Cache data tape deck stores data on cartridges that have a native capacity of 800GB, providing the ability to store more than 60 hours of 25 Mb/s Standard Definition or more than 15 hours of 100 Mb/s High Definition (HD) content. The Prime-Cache systems provide fast file transfers over Gigabit Ethernet at speeds greater than 50MB/s and provides backward compatibility with the ability to read Quantum's LTO-3A cartridges.

Easy To Deploy

With its built-in Gigabit Ethernet connection, the powerful Prime-Cache data tape deck can be plugged into any network to provide direct, simultaneous access by laptops, workstations and servers and to easily archive source masters for digital acquisition or project archives for postproduction.

The Prime-Cache system writes a directory on each cartridge, making the media portable, shelf-storable and interchangeable. With its built-in database to search content, the Prime-Cache system can manage a deep archive of hundreds of terabytes and can be directly accessed without the need for special software.

In addition, because LTO tape drives can back-read cartridges from two previous generations, files written by the Prime-Cache appliance can be read by any LTO-4 or by future LTO-5 and LTO-6 tape drives -- creating a truly future-proof solution that permits source master content to be accessed over a long period of time.

Capable of being deployed in any Operating System environment, including Windows, Mac OS and Unix, the Prime-Cache data tape deck features web page control over all operations and can mount Windows, Mac and Unix file systems (SMB, afp and NFS) as well as support FTP and Bonjour name discovery. Prime-Cache systems provide direct access to archived content from any platform with simultaneous networked multi-user access. It also includes a USB 2.0 connection for direct file ingest from outboard storage devices.
