On his final show Cardinal Egan, who coincidentally celebrates his 77th birthday on April 2, will look back at his nine years as Archbishop of New York, talk about future plans and recall some of the highlights of his groundbreaking career. He has hosted A Conversation with the Cardinal since December 2006, with Catholic Channel program director Rob Astorino. Each week the Cardinal answered listener e-mails, discussed a variety of topics and addressed what is happening in the Archdiocese of New York and other significant issues in the Church.
"Appearing each week on The Catholic Channel for A Conversation with the Cardinal has not only been a splendid way to talk directly with people all across North America, but it has also been a great deal of fun," states Cardinal Egan. "I'm grateful to the audience who have listened and asked so many interesting questions. Their comments and their support were tremendously inspiring and I will miss having the opportunity to be with them each week."
Since its inception and launch in 2006, Cardinal Egan has been involved in building and developing The Catholic Channel on SIRIUS XM Radio. He recognized the channel as an unprecedented opportunity for the Church to utilize the modern medium of satellite radio to communicate directly with the Catholic faithful as well as anyone of any religious faith. The Catholic Channel has become a contemporary method for the Catholic Church to deliver its message and teaching on a daily basis to people around the country as well as a forum for those listeners to call in and be a part of the dialogue.
The following letter, written by a longtime listener, was sent to Cardinal Egan shortly after the announcement of his retirement and demonstrates the impact his program has had on his listeners:
Your Eminence Cardinal Egan,
I am a convert to the Catholic Church. I will celebrate my 12th
anniversary as a Catholic this coming Easter Vigil. My parents,
both of them, are ordained clergy in the Evangelical Friends
Church (Quaker).
Several weeks ago, you were talking about 1 Corinthians 11:23-29
and you said, "Now, after you read this, if there is any way you
can doubt the Catholic understanding of the Real Presence, then
I don't know what will convince you." And you went on to teach
for about 15 minutes on this passage and what it means. I
was...floored, because here was a clear and concise "Scriptural"
(the only Authority my dad would recognize) explanation of the
Blessed Sacrament. I wasn't sure my dad was listening but I
found out later that he was.
A couple of days ago we were going somewhere and dad said, "You
know, I really like the show with that Cardinal guy. He is such
a good teacher and communicator of the Bible." He went on for a
couple of minutes and then he said, "What the Cardinal said
about the Catholic understanding of the Eucharist, that was
pretty clear and very convincing." I was floored. My dad is a
good Quaker, and they have no sacramental theology whatsoever.
So, needless to say, this was and is a big deal.
Not long afterwards the announcement of your retirement and the
appointment of Archbishop Dolan was announced. My dad told me
over and over how sad he was because he really has come to enjoy
your frank and open discussion of Scripture, theology and Church
history. He has continued listening on his own, even though I
am not driving him anymore, as through physical therapy his neck
is much better.
I cannot thank you enough, Your Eminence, for the witness of
authentic Catholic Christianity you have been to my father
through the Catholic Channel. I will be forever grateful and
pray for you to have a blessed and productive retirement.
