AFGE Radio Show to Examine Troubles Inside D.C. Government

President Obama's Contracting Overhaul Also to Be Discussed on "Inside Government"

WASHINGTON, March 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This week, the American Federation of Government Employees' "Inside Government" radio show will take an inside look at Washington, D.C.'s government and the issues facing city workers. The show will air on Friday, March 13 at 10 a.m. ET nationwide on Federal News Radio at www.federalnewsradio.com and 1500 AM in the Washington, D.C., area.

Johnnie Walker, president of AFGE D.C. Local 383, will address the struggles D.C. government workers have communicating with Mayor Adrian Fenty, and ways his local tried to overcome the barrier. Walker also will take a closer look at several issues facing the District - a struggling public school system, an uphill battle for low-income residents and the aging population, and disagreements about whistle-blower protections - and how Local 383 has tried to fix them.

John Threlkeld, AFGE legislative representative, then will discuss President Obama's order that the Office of Management and Budget overhaul its contracting efforts. Threlkeld will explain how the 2009 omnibus appropriations bill, recently signed by Obama, suspends new Circular A-76 competitions, thereby limiting the outsourcing of federal work. This is a shift from the Bush administration policy, which focused on outsourcing more government work to private contractors.

"Inside Government" is hosted by AFGE Assistant General Counsel J. Ward Morrow. Programs are archived on the Federal News Radio Web site and can be heard on demand at http://www.federalnewsradio.com/ or http://www.afge.org/insidegovernment.
