Bob Costas to Speak at Tri-C Foundation Luncheon
CLEVELAND, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cuyahoga Community College Foundation has announced that sportscaster and broadcaster Bob Costas will serve as keynote speaker at the 2008 Presidential Scholarship Luncheon. The luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, October 22, 11:30 a.m. - 1:05 p.m., at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel.
Proceeds from the event, presented in partnership with AT&T, will benefit the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation Scholarship Fund. Since the luncheons began in 1992, more than $5.5 million has been raised for scholarships to help those who might not otherwise be able to access education at Tri-C.
Bob Costas launched his career with NBC in 1979. He has covered every major sport, but is perhaps most identified with the Olympics and baseball. He has anchored NBC's primetime coverage of the last five summer Olympics, including the 2008 Beijing summer Olympics, which was the most-watched Olympics in history. Costas also hosted the winter games in Salt Lake City and Torino, Italy, and is scheduled to host the 2010 Vancouver winter games and the 2012 London summer games.
Costas has won nineteen Emmy Awards -- fifteen for outstanding sports host or play-by-play, two for writing, one for interviewing, and one for feature reporting. He has been named "National Sportscaster of the Year" an unprecedented eight times by his peers.
Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Costas' career flourished as he became a presence on NBC's major sports programming, including NBC's baseball Game of the Week telecasts (1983-1989) and NFL Live pre-game shows (1984-1992). In the 90s, Costas returned to baseball, handling play-by-play for NBC's All-Star, playoff and World Series telecasts. He has covered six league championship series, five World Series, and four Super Bowls for NBC Sports. Costas was host of NBC's NBA coverage and became the play-by-play voice of the NBA on NBC (1997-2000).
A native of Queens, New York, he attended Syracuse University where he majored in communications. He began his professional career at WSYR-TV and radio in 1973 while studying at Syracuse.
"We are looking forward to hearing Bob Costas share his commentary on the world of sports and broadcasting, and we are lucky to have him join us, just after his return from the Olympics," said Cuyahoga Community College President Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton. "This important event will provide scholarship money for students who otherwise might not have the opportunity to pursue their education at Tri-C."
