Danny Glover, Amnesty International Join Local Groups to Demand Justice for Hurricane Katrina Survivors At New Orleans Sneak Preview of 'Trouble The Water'

Film, Based on Footage From Local Talent Kimberly Rivers Roberts, Gives Real-Life Perspective From the 9th Ward; Opens in Theaters on August 22

As the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaches, Actor Danny Glover will join Amnesty International USA (AIUSA), Kimberly Rivers Roberts and Scott Roberts, Tia Lessin and Carl Deal and Zeitgeist Films at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts on Sunday, August 17th for a sneak preview of the documentary "Trouble the Water." A question-and-answer session and reception will follow the screening, which begins at 2 p.m. The screening honors audience members who survived Katrina and community members who have worked tirelessly in the city since the storm first made landfall.

The film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, depicts the experience of 9th Ward residents trapped in New Orleans during the hurricane. Directed and produced by Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, the film is based on footage shot by Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring New Orleans rap artist, as she and her husband Scott film their harrowing retreat to higher ground and the dramatic rescues of friends and neighbors. It also reveals the devastation of their neighborhood and the repeated failures of local and national government.

When Danny Glover and Joslyn Barnes, his producing partner at Louverture Films, saw "Trouble the Water," they came on board as executive producers. "When the hurricane struck the Gulf and the floodwaters rose and tore through New Orleans, it did not turn the region into a Third World country... it revealed one," said Glover. "I felt so empowered by Kimberly and Scott and by their actions. Their story very clearly shows why it is critical for all people to have a voice."

At the event, AIUSA's Adiyah Ali will address New Orleans residents' inability to return to the areas from which they were displaced. "Under well-established human rights standards, people have the right to come back to the place they call home," said Adiyah Ali, "It has been three long years for thousands of New Orleans residents whose rights have been denied. The time for change is long overdue."
