The Assassination of Trotsky

History en Espanol (TM) Presents a Two-Hour Special About the Events Leading to the Murder of a Russian Revolutionary Leader

Premieres on History en Espanol(TM) on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at 8-10 pm ET

NEW YORK, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- One of the great architects of the Russian Revolution of 1917, Leon Trotsky was a rival to Vladimir Lenin in the early stages of Communist rule. He would clash with Josef Stalin when his Leftist Opposition challenged the dictator's policies and rise. After Lenin's death, and in the Great Purge of the 1930s, Trotsky was sent into foreign exile by Stalin, eventually ending up in Mexico. Premiering on Sunday, August 17 at 8 PM ET on History en Espanol, THE ASSASSINATION OF TROTSKY takes an in-depth look into the last year of Leon Trotsky's life.

In his exile, Leon Trotsky eventually settled in the town of Coyoacan, Mexico, hoping he had escaped assassination at the hands of the Communist leader's henchmen. On August 20, 1940, a young man named Ramon Mercader gained entry to the study of Trotsky's heavily guarded house under the false pretense that he wanted Trotsky to read an article he had written. While Trotsky examined the article, Mercader removed an alpine climbing ax from his overcoat and plunged it into the great thinker's head.

THE ASSASSINATION OF TROTSKY depicts in fascinating detail the year leading up to the murder of the former revolutionary leader, culminating in the final moment when Trotsky met his fateful death. In a parallel story thread, the two-hour special explores the reasons behind Trotsky's guiding principle that all workers must be emancipated by transforming a society from capitalism to socialism by means of revolution.
