With Threats of Strike Looming, First Time Director Offers New Take on Filmmaking

With Threats of Strike Looming, First Time Director Offers New Take on Filmmaking

Screening in NY Ignites Industry Buzz About The Future of Films Without Actors

LOS ANGELES, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Producer Kelly Brown screened the cult experimental film RAILED for industry executives in New York on Thursday, which launched an internal conversation about what lies ahead for filmmakers if the ominous SAG strike occurs.

RAILED blurs the line between reality and narrative and it's creative attempt works so well that it's director, Ryan Fox, is already being celebrated as a young Cassavettes. In the film, Fox sends two unknowns on a cross-country train trip from Los Angeles to New York, arms them with a story line and hidden microphones and designs a platform that allows the plot to develop organically. When the two "actors" erupt in a lovers quarrel aboard the "sightseer lounge," the spotlight shifts to the unsuspecting passengers on the train who inevitably become the stars of the film. Fox shot RAILED completely with undercover camera equipment and depended on "real people" and natural human curiosity to tell his story. With no lack of the outside interest he produced, he succeeds in capturing a palpable storyline for his audience.

During the Q&A, the director highlighted the fact that, with technology today, "anyone can make a movie." But not everyone has the talent to create a new way of filmmaking that allows actors to fight for their rights while simultaneously allowing filmmakers to offer entertainment in theaters. Could this do for films what the reality genre did for television? The question has sparked a genuine interest in distributing RAILED and attention to his next film PRESCRIPTION PITTSBURGH, which teams him up again with Brown.

RAILED will be screening once more exclusively for industry insiders in Los Angeles in the last week of June, before hitting the festival circuit.
