TV4US Comments on Cable's Failing Grades in Recent Customer Satisfaction Survey

ARLINGTON, Va., June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- TV4US Executive Director Lizanne Sadlier released the following statement regarding cable's poor showing in the Q1 2008 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), compiled by the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business available at www.theacsi.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=180&Itemid=186

"Free from competition, cable companies have gotten away with continually raising rates for declining service and the same, old technology, so it is no surprise that once again cable fared poorly in the American Customer Satisfaction Index. This marks an all-time low for big cable, with the largest cable provider in the country, and another major cable company tied for last place among cable and satellite providers. But with competition on the way, this survey should serve as a warning to the cable industry.

"Television viewers around the country will soon experience greater choice, better service and lower prices. Twenty-two states have cleared the way for cable competition through legislation and attorney general opinions that reform archaic video franchise laws. We look forward to the other twenty eight states opening their television markets to competition as well.

"Until cable customers are able to voice their frustration by choosing another provider, they will continue to take desperate measures, like the man who developed an entire website dedicated to voicing complaints about a major cable company, the Pennsylvania couple who sent their cable company a check for 'My Right Arm and Zero Dollars,' and the Los Angeles city attorney's office that is suing the local cable company for causing 'major havoc and distress.'

"When competition begins to flourish, customers will no longer have to give their right arm to the cable company and will be able to voice their dissatisfaction in the most powerful way possible -- by switching providers when policy makers make competition available."
