Statewide Video Reform Legislation Delivers Choice; Rapid Deployment of AT&T U-verse Service Benefits Hoosiers
More Indiana Consumers Can Now Enjoy Video Choice With AT&T U-verse TV
INDIANAPOLIS, April 7, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- More Indiana residents and their televisions can now break free from the entrenched cable providers. Just two years after video reform was passed in Indiana, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced that AT&T U-verse(SM) TV and Internet services are now available to more than 300,000 living units in parts of several communities throughout the state.
Since introducing U-verse TV to Indiana in December 2006, AT&T has made the service available in parts of many Indiana communities, including Anderson, Bloomington, Indianapolis, Kokomo and Muncie. The service is also available in parts of Lake County, including Gary, Griffith, Merrillville, Highland, Crown Point, Hammond, Schererville and Dyer. There are plans to reach even more Indiana communities.
"One of the primary goals of our video reform bill was to attract investment that would bring new choices to Indiana consumers," said Sen. Brandt Hershman. "Several providers have responded to our call, and I'm pleased to see real benefits being delivered to so many Hoosiers."
Gov. Mitch Daniels signed the telecom and video reform law (HEA 1279) into effect in 2006. The legislation was championed by Sen. Hershman and Rep. Mike Murphy. Since passage of the bill, telecom and cable companies around the state have invested more than $500 million in delivering entertainment and communications services across the state.
"The volume of investment and innovation that has been delivered to Indiana, from providers large and small, has really exceeded our expectations," said Rep. Murphy. "We're happy that consumers benefit with new options and better value for video and broadband services."
"Gov. Daniels and the Indiana General Assembly really paved the way for video choice," said George S. Fleetwood, president of AT&T Indiana. "By updating our laws, these people made Indiana a very attractive place for us to invest in bringing new entertainment options to consumers."
"Customers want a video choice that delivers great value, innovative features, a huge HD lineup, and the content they want like Big Ten Network. And that's what U-verse TV offers them today," said Hardmon Williams, AT&T vice president and general manager, Indiana markets. "Customer demand and excitement for our innovative video choice has been strong, and our team is looking forward to bringing choice to even more customers."
AT&T is the only national provider to offer a 100 percent Internet Protocol-based television (IPTV) service, making AT&T U-verse TV one of the most advanced television offerings available anywhere. AT&T is deploying next-generation video services, including AT&T U-verse TV, as part of its mission to connect people with their world, everywhere they live and work, and do it better than anyone else.
