It is actually an 'Exoskeleton' - essentially a robotic suit that gives its wearer greater strength, endurance and agility

What: The "Iron Man" movie opens nationally Friday, May 2, 2008. Popular
Science reports in its May issue that Raytheon Company has the
"real" Iron Man. It is actually an "Exoskeleton" - essentially a
robotic suit that gives its wearer greater strength, endurance and
agility.

-- Exoskeleton is being developed by Raytheon Company's newest research
facility in Utah. Raytheon Sarcos is a world leader in advanced
robotics and micro-electronics.

super heroes depicted in comic books and Hollywood movies.
-- Exoskeleton as amplifier.
-- The Exoskeleton is being developed by Raytheon Sarcos for the U.S.
Army.
-- The suit is a combination of sensors, actuators and controllers all
packaged in a futuristic design.
-- Dr. Stephen Jacobsen leads Raytheon Sarcos and this project.
-- With the Exoskeleton, Raytheon is pushing the boundaries of technology
