This World War II epic motion picture was the winner of seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director (David Lean) and Best Actor (Sir Alec Guinness). The film was also selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress National Film Registry.
"The Bridge on the River Kwai" will air along with other National Film Registry classics on HDNet Movies in April including, "Blazing Saddles," "Bonnie and Clyde," "Fargo," "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," "Midnight Cowboy," "The Wild Bunch," Rebel Without a Cause," and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
"The Bridge on the River Kwai," stars Alec Guinness and William Holden and tells the story of a British colonel supervising his troop's construction of a bridge, vital to the enemy -- all under the suspicious and vindictive eye of their Japanese POW camp leaders.
Guinness, is Colonel Nicholson, the leader of the British POW's who initially intends to sabotage the bridge. But, as time and construction progresses, the bridge becomes a symbol of British fortitude and dignity in the face of indigence and hardship. And, little do the British know, but there is a plan by the Allies to destroy the bridge.
Though a fictional story, the movie is rooted in history, as British POWs did construct part of the Burma railroad in 1942-43.
