Natural Sciences for the presentation of the 2008 grant
allocations totaling $2,100,000 in crucial operating support.
In conjunction with the grant distributions is the presentation
of the 3rd Annual Councilman David Cohen Award, a tribute to
memory of the late Councilman who was a lifelong advocate and
supporter of Philadelphia's cultural community. Established in
2006, the award is given to an organization which has
demonstrated -- by its programming, artistic product, or
services offered -- an outstanding commitment to social and
economic justice. This year's recipient, Scribe Video Center,
was founded in 1982 as a place where emerging and experienced
media artists could gain access to the tools and knowledge of
video making and work together in a supportive environment.
An initiative of the Mayor's office and City Council, The
Philadelphia Cultural Fund selects grant recipients through a
peer panel process. Since its inception in 1993, the PCF has
distributed $23,700,000 to hundreds of arts and culture
organizations throughout the city. The Cohen Award is selected
by the Cultural Fund Board from nominations made by the peer
committees reviewing each individual artistic discipline.
