National Health Education Tour to Kick-Off in Atlanta
National Health Education Tour to Kick-Off in Atlanta
ATLANTA, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- On April 10th, a music event four years in the making will kick off at the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta. Complete with well known artists Ben Kweller, Ari Hest, Toby Lightman and screaming fans, this concert will also have an element not always present -- a purpose.
The Music Inspires Health -- National Health Education Tour is a concert series like no other. Combining musical performances with short films created by young Hollywood directors, this tour seeks to educate adolescents and young adults about the behavior-related health threats they face, while providing entertainment through music.
The tour -- part of an ongoing initiative that seeks to reach young people through interactive multimedia -- was the vision of Benjamin Levy, a fourth- year medical student at Emory University who was inspired by the HIV prevention efforts of international superstars Queen and U2. With the idea that music was a way to communicate important issues to young people, the vision of Music Inspires Health was born.
"When I shared the idea with my friends, they were excited by what I was trying to do," Levy said. "When one friend volunteered to be assistant director of the campaign, I knew we were really onto something."
That friend, Music Inspires Health co-founder Tyler Wind is now joined by other medical students from across the country, educators, public health experts, musicians, film makers and volunteers in what is positioned to become annual health education concert tour.
The national concert tour will include short films intended to grab the audience's attention with compelling story lines and powerful cinematography. Music Inspires Health is also reaching young adults through an interactive web site with flash animation and streaming audio.
The artists performing as part of the tour will be speaking candidly about the health issues that they support, adding a unique element that is helping distinguish Music Inspires Health from other tours. Health topics include HIV/STD Prevention, Smoking Prevention, Depression Awareness, Exercise, and Nutrition. Additional musicians who have volunteered to perform during the tour include Lisa Loeb, Ingrid Michaelson, Victor Wooten, and R&B singer Trey Songz. Tour stops include Boston, NYC, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles.
The programs for Music Inspires Health were created through an elaborate advisory process that included conducting focus groups with college students and meetings with public health experts to develop entertaining multimedia strategies that empower adolescents, college students, and young adults.
