KCET-TV Begins Fourth Season Production of Award-Winning Series, A Place of Our Own & Los Ninos en Su Casa
PBS Information Series Kicks Off New Season With New Topics and New Host
LOS ANGELES, March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- KCET-TV, the flagship PBS station in Los Angeles, begins production this month of the fourth season of its award-winning information series, A Place of Our Own and its Spanish language companion series, Los Ninos en Su Casa.
KCET will produce 50 new half-hour segments of each program this season. The series is distributed by PBS, and is broadcast on PBS stations reaching approximately 72% of the country. Los Ninos en Su Casa is also featured on the new PBS Spanish-language digital platform, V-Me.
The informational series provide English and Spanish-speaking parents and caregivers of preschool age children with practical advice on raising children who are socially, emotionally and physically ready to enter and succeed in school. In addition, the new season will address a variety of new topics, such as the importance of family history and learning to care for our planet, recognizing children with special needs, preventing childhood obesity and also helping kids cope with difficult situations like military deployment, grief, and more.
Joining A Place of Our Own as the new season host is Southern California native Elizabeth Sanchez, a seasoned television journalist who worked as a national correspondent based in Dallas, where she covered everything from the space shuttle Columbia tragedy to high profile trials, wildfires, hurricanes, the White House and Grammy Awards. Most recently she worked as a television news anchor and reporter in San Diego. Sanchez has currently begun taping the new season of A Place of Our Own and her episodes will begin airing on May 15. Alina Rosario will continue as host of the Spanish-language version Los Ninos en Su Casa.
The programs are funded through the generous support of BP, First 5 California, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and are accompanied by extensive bilingual websites and hands-on workshops. Searchable by topic, information is available 24/7 at http://www.aplaceofourown.org/ and http://www.losninosensucasa.org/, including resource links and message boards fully moderated by experts that enable childcare providers to interact with one another.
The series has been honored with numerous awards, including the 2006 Peabody Award, considered the most selective and prestigious in the electronic media industry, and a Parents' Choice award for both the series and website.
The series is produced as part of KCEd(TM), the education initiative at KCET. Since the series' launch, viewing studies indicate that 80 per cent of participants report increased knowledge in tested areas such as managing aggressive child behavior, sharing, and the importance of learning through play, as well as changes in their own attitudes and behavior as childcare providers.
A Place of Our Own and Los Ninos en Su Casa are produced by KCET, in association with 44 Blue Productions Inc. The series is produced in association with Sesame Workshop. Stephanie Drachkovitch and Mary Mazur are executive producers. Joyce Campbell is executive in charge of production.
