200,000 Pictures From the Largest Image Documentation Center in Austria Can Now be Digitally Retrieved - Another Step by APA - Austria Press Agency, in Becoming the "Memory of the Nation"

VIENNA, March 10/PRNewswire/ -- With over 1.6 million objects in the inventory of the Austrian National
Library (ONB) picture archive, the largest picture documentation center in
Austria can now be downloaded over the APA-PictureDesk
(http://www.picturedesk.com) image portal. In the historical picture sector,
"the ONB picture archive has a reputation that is just as undisputed as the
Austrian news agency, APA, when it comes to current image production"
stressed ONB General Director Johanna Rachinger on March 6th at a press
conference in Vienna. "The intensive cooperation with APA-PictureDesk
provides us the opportunity to even more professionally market these
incomparable images nationally and internationally."

About 200,000 historical graphics and photos from the ONB archive have
already been digitalized and can be ordered on-line, and the inventory grows
by 10,000 pictures each year. Other inventories, such as the historical
archive of the Austrian broadcasting company (ORF) are integrated on an
ongoing basis.

Wolfgang Vyslozil, Chairman of the Management of APA, emphasizes that
with the APA database, they are now one of the largest commercial database
providers in the German-speaking region. But the scope of the text is far
ahead in striving to reproduce the "memory of the nation". Of the 100 million
downloadable documents in the APA database, only ten million are image
documents. "We want to become a really large provider in pictures." After
acquiring the picture agency Contrast und Keystone (Switzerland), and with
access to the ONB picture data, "a great step has been successfully taken
towards getting as close as possible to perfection" in the visual area too.

The portal provides users with a clear and clean presentation of
"Austrian Heritage".
