With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the show was based loosely on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. While the show had its detractors, it has proved to be a classic, with its music often played and the subject of endless revivals. Each year on Broadway, some 40 new productions are staged.
