John Bul Dau, a Lost Boy of Sudan, Shares His Heartbreaking and Inspiring Journey of Survival on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Detroit Film Theatre
DETROIT, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- John Bul Dau comes to Detroit to recount his story of unparalleled courage and remarkable achievements on Oct. 10, 2007 at 7 p.m. at the Detroit Film Theatre, located in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Dau will discuss his experiences as a Lost Boy of Sudan, the political crisis in Sudan and what it was like coming to the United States as an immigrant.
In 1987, John Bul Dau was only 13 years old when the Sudanese Civil War brought northern soldiers to his village in a nighttime raid, Dau fled into the bush to save his life. War ravaged his village and shattered his age-old society, a life of herding and agriculture marked by dignity, respect and the simple virtues of Dinka tribal tradition. Dau was one of thousands of Lost Boys who fled their homeland to survive; he passed through hunger, exhaustion and violence, finding shelter at refugee camps. This was the beginning of a terrifying journey into an exile that would last over 16 years and lead him thousands of miles from home.
Learn about and experience John Bul Dau's quiet pride, compassionate courage and remarkable achievements as written about and shown in his memoir, God Grew Tired of Us. "Hope is never lost. Impossible things are the things you refuse to do," Dau explains. The major motion picture God Grew Tired of Us was the winner of both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
John has been widely recognized as a man who is driven to make a difference. He is one of only eight recipients in the world for the 2007 National Geographic Emerging Explorer Award. This award recognizes him as one of the next generation of leaders. In recent years, Dau also has been honored to receive the Martin Luther King Jr. Man of the Year Award.
