Conyers to Bloomberg TV: Gonzales has a lot to Account for

He tells BLOOMBERG TV 'We aren't through with the White House;' Criticizes Chertoff on Katrina

NEW YORK, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- In the wake of US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' resignation, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Michigan) appeared on the BLOOMBERG TELEVISION(R) program "Money & Politics" this evening. Conyers told Bloomberg's Peter Cook, "I am surprised (about the resignation). It seems as if he and the President had formed a bond that was so inseparable, I did not expect that he would resign. After six months of such embarrassment, I think they finally realized that while the Congress is not in session, this is a good time to close this thing down."

US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, 52, resigned this morning after months of accusations that he politicized the US Department of Justice and misled Congress over the firing of federal prosecutors and wiretapping of suspected terrorist.

Conyers, one of the most vocal critics of Gonzales, went on to say that "(Gonzales) has a lot to account for. Things we do not know the answers to. We will continue to look into these things." Conyers said Gonzales' resignation doesn't mean the end to probes of the US Attorney firings or of the warrantless wiretap program. "We aren't through with the White House by a long stretch," Conyers said to BLOOMBERG TELEVISION.

Regarding a replacement for Gonzales, Conyers said he might be willing to support former Deputy Attorney General James Comey. "He came before our committee and we thought he did an admirable job. I think that of all the names we have spoken about, he would be head and shoulders the best kind of nominee. I would expect to see the Senate thinking about him." When asked about Michael Chertoff as a possible replacement, Conyers told Bloomberg, "Michael Chertoff is the most identifiable person still in the Administration that is responsible for the tragedy of Katrina."
