World Famous National Geographic Explorer, Kingsley Holgate Launches Year-Long Humanitarian Expedition April 25th in South Africa to Fight Malaria
- April 25th Designated Malaria Awareness Day in U.S., South Africa & Europe -
COSTA MESA, Calif., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Nando's USA (www.nandosusa.com), distributors of South African-produced Nando's Peri-Peri Sauces, marinades and other products in specialty retail outlets throughout the U.S., today announced its sponsorship of a humanitarian expedition to help wipe out malaria in Africa. In an effort to kick off Malaria Awareness Day and Africa Malaria Day, world-famous National Geographic explorer, Kingsley Holgate, will begin a one-year expedition circumnavigating the continent of Africa through 33 countries following the famous Portuguese spice route. Together with Holgate, employees of Nando's will hand out tens of thousands of mosquito nets to remote African villages to help prevent malaria, the silent killer that claims one child every 30 seconds and over one million people each year.
Holgate (www.kingsleyholgate.co.za) is working with USAID, The Global Fund, the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), as well as with volunteers and monetary support from the private sector such as Nando's Peri-Peri Sauces, Land Rover and Garmin GPS to help distribute mosquito nets, books and reading glasses in remote villages throughout Africa. Some of the countries that Holgate is visiting that will contain live satellite feed opportunities include Cape Town, South Africa (April 25, 2007); Ghana (provisionally September 5, 2007); Keyna (Lamu) (provisionally February 15, 2008).
The United States government is working with many countries, organizations including the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (www.businessfightsmalaria.org), and the private sector to wipe out malaria in Africa. The President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) is a five-year, $1.2 billion program focused on fighting malaria in 15 of the most-affected countries in Africa as well as raising awareness and funds to combat this disease. Over $103.4 million in new private-sector commitments to this effort have been made since August, according to Malaria No More (MNM www.malarianomore.org), a nonprofit network of more than 60 organizations launched December 14, 2006 as part of the White House Summit on malaria.
South Africa has designated Wednesday, April 25 as Africa Malaria Day and, for the first time in the U.S., President George W. Bush has proclaimed it Malaria Awareness Day. In Africa, countries will be organizing events and activities leading up to Africa Malaria Day. In Europe, coalitions and alliances against malaria will be advocating in parliaments. The U.S. will be highlighting this day by educating and working in partnership to reverse the progression of malaria.
Nando's Peri-Peri Sauces is proud to be a sponsor of this world-first humanitarian expedition and is committed to donating $.15 per bottle sold (on selected items) for one year to purchase more mosquito nets for Holgate to pass out during his expedition around the coast of Africa. Holgate will also be educating participants about cultural and culinary traditions in the region, including one of Africa's most famous spices, the Peri-Peri chilli pepper.
When placed over a bed, mosquito nets are a simple lifesaving solution that lasts approximately four years and are the most effective between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. when female mosquitoes usually bite and transmit malaria. Globally, 500 million people are infected with malaria every year, with 90 percent of all malaria cases found in Africa. Most often, nets will be used by one mother and two of her children, making this initiative extremely important to the future generations of Africa. Pregnant women and children under the age of five are most susceptible.
