FCC Move Applauded by Video Industry Organization

The Video Access Alliance foresees increased minority and independent participation as a result of modification to video franchising procedure

WASHINGTON, March 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Video Access Alliance has reaffirmed their support for the recent FCC policy change that will speed up the process companies go through to enter the video services market. The VAA (a non-profit organization that advocates for and advises independent, emerging and minority networks, video programmers, entertainers and other industry participants) feels this procedural adjustment will directly lead to more opportunities for aspiring content providers.

A year ago, when the Federal Communications Commission asked for comments regarding the possibility of updating cable franchising regulations, the VAA eagerly responded. They felt then -- as now -- that an open, easily negotiated franchising procedure would be a major step toward helping more American entrepreneurs and artists realize their dreams of participating in video programming.

Although minority communities of all kinds are ardent consumers of all varieties of video communications -- from premium cable options to public access channels -- they are drastically underrepresented in the programming they buy. The VAA is dedicated to improving opportunities for independent, emerging and minority networks and video content providers.

The FCC's decision to simplify cable franchising would advance this cause by encouraging faster and wider deployment of new and innovative distribution platforms. Allowing more companies to compete in video markets will multiply the potential outlets for the work of independent and minority content providers, especially those without corporate media affiliations.

Developing competitive video markets also speeds the dissemination of cutting-edge communications technologies such as high-speed broadband Internet. This is essential for the assimilation and success of today's minority, low-income and immigrant populations. Access to this important tool will give them the ability to fully participate and thrive in modern American society.

The VAA looks forward to the full implementation of this much-needed change in federal franchising policy. It is a considerable improvement to the present system and a significant step in the right direction.
