12th Montreal Chamber Music Fest is Classical With a Twist

Opening Concert Features $20 Million in Rare Instruments

Closing Concert is 12-Hour Musical Marathon

14 innovative musical "happenings" in between

MONTREAL, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In keeping with its tradition of untraditional programming, the 12th annual Montreal Chamber Music Festival (May 5 - June 2, 2007) will open and close with unprecedented events as it kicks off Montreal's summer festival season.

May 5th's festival opener, Celebration! Canada Council at 50, will feature all 13 of the Council's current Musical Instrument Bank winners performing on their precious loaners, including Jessica Linnebach (1700 Taft Stradivari violin); Judy Kang (1689 Baumgartner Stradivari violin); and Festival Artistic Director Denis Brott himself (1705 Turner-Brott Tecchler cello). The combined worth of the instruments is estimated to be 20 million dollars.

Brott was not only one of the creators of the Musical Instrument Bank in 1987, he was also granted its first instrument, which is loaned to him for the duration of his career.

"This cello has made an enormous difference in life and in my career as an artist," exclaims Brott. "The essence of the Musical Instrument Bank program is to support our gifted Canadian talent, and that is why we honor the Canada Council for the Arts on this special anniversary."

The Festival's closing event on June 2nd is a Schubertiade: Franz Schubert's Music, a 12-hour marathon involving more than 50 musicians. One ticket will allow admission and re-admission from noon until midnight.

In between are 14 other innovative, eclectic, and world-class "happenings" which also take place in the historic St. James United Church (463 St. Catherine St. W.). All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. (except for June 2nd's marathon), and include some of the world's finest music and musicians, often combined with dance, readings, and projections of photographs, artwork or film.

Founded by Brott in 1995, the Montreal Chamber Music Festival is dedicated to promoting chamber music in all of its diverse forms through collaborations with other artistic disciplines. This twelfth edition will be "a musical feast for everyone," promises Brott.
