Comcast and Common Sense Media Announce Partnership to Provide Cross-Platform Media Education Tools for Parents
Multi-Year Agreement Calls for Common Sense Media Program Reviews to Be Available On Demand and Online
PHILADELPHIA and SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- With the dramatic growth in consumer access to an increasing array of media content across multiple platforms, Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA)(NASDAQ:CMCSK), the nation's leading provider of cable, entertainment and communications products and services, and Common Sense Media today announced that they are working together to offer reviews and recommendations to help parents make informed choices about what their children are viewing. The multi-year commitment will make detailed, age-based information about TV shows, movies, Web sites, video games and books available to millions of Comcast customers nationwide, offering another tool for parents to help ensure their children have an enjoyable and safe experience when using different types of media.
Comcast plans to make dozens of Common Sense Media's reviews of movies and television programs available on its signature ON DEMAND service and on its broadband portal, Comcast.net, later this year. Common Sense Media, the leading non-partisan organization dedicated to kids and media, provides independent, age-based reviews and ratings on movies, television shows, books, video games, websites and music so families can determine whether the selection is right for them. Common Sense Media's informational programs on media topics of concern to families, such as Internet Safety, also will be available.
"Integrating Common Sense Media's insightful reviews and recommendations with Comcast's services gives parents a trustworthy resource to help them make thoughtful, informed decisions about what their children watch, read and play," said Greg Butz, Senior Vice President, Product Development and GM of Video Services for Comcast. "This is another example of how we're continuing to provide customers with more choices, supported by tools - from parental controls on our digital cable service to online security and safety features on our high-speed Internet service - to help manage media use in their homes."
Comcast Digital Cable offers a wide range of parental control options, allowing customers to restrict access to specific programs based on ratings, titles or channels. In 2005, the company introduced a family programming package with an average of 35-40 channels, including 16 family-friendly networks with primarily G-rated programming as well as all national and local broadcast channels and more. Comcast High-Speed Internet also offers numerous parental control options, including the ability to restrict incoming e-mail to a specific list of senders, blocking specific Web sites and setting time limits on Internet access.
"We are delighted to help Comcast empower millions of parents and kids with easy-to-use, age-based information right at the point of decision to help them navigate through the rapidly changing media environment," said James P. Steyer, CEO and Founder of Common Sense Media. "Comcast has long been a leader in delivering quality entertainment and communication services to their customers, and this partnership demonstrates their strong commitment to kids and families."
