The Christophers Set to Honor Award Winners on March 15, 2007
58th annual gala to honor feature films, books for adults and young people, and broadcast TV and cable programs that affirm the highest values of the human spirit
NEW YORK, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Christophers announced today that the 58th annual Christopher Awards gala will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2007, 6 - 10 p.m., at the McGraw-Hill Building in New York City. The Christopher Awards salute media that remind audiences and readers, of all faiths and of no particular faith, of their worth, individuality and power to make a difference and positively influence our world. Special Christopher Award winners will be announced on February 20; winners in the film, book and TV/cable categories will be announced on March 8.
"We have been privileged to present Christopher Awards since 1949 to writers, producers, directors and illustrators for work that affirms the highest values of the human spirit," said Dennis Heaney, president of The Christophers. To date, 1,291 films, books, broadcast TV and cable programs and 87 special honorees have received Christopher Awards.
Previous winners include such distinguished producer/directors as Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Bruce Beresford, David Lynch, Roberto Benigni, M. Night Shyamalan, Hayao Miyazaki, Stephen Daldry, and Ken Burns; authors David McCullough, Dominique Lapierre, Stephen E. Ambrose, Jonathan Kozol and Dava Sobel; children's book authors Joan Bauer, Lois Lowry and Natalie Babbit; illustrators Jerry Pinkney and Adam Gustavson; and author/illustrators Demi and Mark Teague.
Special Christopher Awards have singled out such individual media achievements and life achievers as Elie Wiesel, Carroll O'Connor, Bob Hope, Mary Higgins Clark, Charles M. Schulz, "Face the Nation," "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," "American Experience" and "ExxonMobil Masterpiece Theatre." And since 1987, the James Keller Award has acknowledged individuals dedicated to the well-being of today's youth, including master puppeteer Caroll "Big Bird" Spinney, dance educator Jacques d'Amboise, actor/community activist Andrew Shue, and Children's Television Workshop creator Joan Ganz Cooney.
